Final Production

WE'RE FINALLY DONE!!! This is our final opening scene. We made sure to try our best to come out with the best results. Please enjoy watching our film opening.

Behind The Scene of Inner Turmoil

During filming and producing our opening we faced a couple problems but filming and producing our filming has been fun so far. It did take a couple tries to get the shots that we thought were best for our final productions. We have a couple behind the scene and blooper clips from filming.

Our Bloopers:

Production/Editing Research:

Technology Research:

We didn't use much technology since resources were limited but our research did allow us to understand what technology most films in our genre utilize and how we can make due with what we have to create the same effect.

Pre- Production:

We consider scheduling our shoot as an important part of our overall project. Doing so will allow us to stay organized and on track to how, when and where we want to film a certain scene and certain shot. Its said that " the more time you put into pre-production and planning, the smoother and more successful your production is likely to be" Which helps us to achieve our goal of having and easy and smooth running production time, filming, and etc.

We used studio binder to create our shooting schedule. The website was user-friendly so it wasn't hard to create our schedule. It was easily accessible making our schedule easier to abide by.

Our Shooting Schedule:

We decided that we are going to film actual place such as the school hallway, sidewalks and more. Instead of using a green screen. We chose too film in these openings so that we can help the watcher understand that this a real life situation so we use real locations and locations that are usually relatable such as a high school and a normal one-story house.

Using cap cut me and my partner were each able to create a design for our brand. The first thing we had to do though was come up with a name for our brand or company. After much thought we settled on the name "Black Horse Productions". Once the name was established we worked on different designs to present to each other to come up with a final brand design.

My Brand Design Idea:

Story Board + Shot by Shot Description

Story boarding is" a sequence of drawings, typically with some directions and dialogue, representing the shots planned from a movie or television production. To make our storyboard we used a website called storyboardthat.com which was very user friendly. although you do have to pay after two sign ins on the same account we were able to successfully finish the story board quickly and easily.

Storyboarding took about 2 days to complete because we didn't have many shot but we want dot make sure that it was as accurate to the way we wanted the scene to look as possible. Although not everything is perfect and looks like the actual shot we we're able to get our point across and help the person viewing the story board an idea of how the opening is going to look. the only thing we were unable to do when story boarding is showing camera movements and angle since the website did not allow us to do so but we did input that information into studio binder.

Our Storyboard:

Shot by Shot Description:
We used the shot by shot description to help us understand how we can portray our meaning through cinematography, mise en scene, sound, and editing.

Script Writing

Script writing other wise known as screenwriting is the process of writing you story in a screenplay medium. Screenwriting is used to help a person get everything down on paper by recording the characters movement, actions, expression and dialogue in screenplay format. I believe that doing this step helps us better envision how we want our opening to turn out. It also reveals to us things that we could fix, changes that we want to make so that we can improve our opening. This step really shouldn't be skipped because it seems a useless but it actually helps better your plot and the way everything turns out.

The process of script writing took about a couple of days. Honestly script writing doesn't take much time but we wanted to make sure that it was as specific as possible and as good as we could make it. And we are very satisfied with how it turned out.

Shot by Shot Analysis of a Dark Drama Opening- SAVE ME

The opening the psychological drama opening that i chose to analyze is a Korean Drama named "Save Me" its about a girl who moves to a new town with her family and in this new town her brother is getting bullied at their new school even though she tries her best to protect him it just wasn't enough. When her brother reached his breaking point he decided to take his own life at the school leaving the girl heartbroken and alone. This resulted in the parents so shocked that they decided to go to a church one day soon to find out that it was a cult that she just could escape. In the end she wasn't able to open her parents eyes to what was going on in the "church" and ended up escaping on her own with the help of a couple of friends from her new school.

Shot 1:

The shot begins with a fade-in shot then the camera tilts down using what looks like a hand-held camera movement creating tension. There is dim low key lighting that creates and eerie or unsafe vibe. Also introduces the setting.

Shot 2:

A close up shot of a girls hand out the window which may symbolize freedom. The dark lighting continues but her clothes is a contrasting a contrasting color yellow. Whilst showing the credits.

Shot 3:

A birds eye view shot focusing on the road their on showing they are the only car on the road representing loneliness. Still with dark lighting and only one little beam of light that was also shown in front of them in the shot before.

Shot 4:

A back shot of the car whilst they're in a tunnel. The tunnel seems incessant foreshadowing that the people in the car are going to have a long period of darkness and trouble in their life.

Shot 5:

A medium shot of the front of the car. This was used to introduce the people inside of the car and most likely the main characters. Along with this they were able to somewhat show the facial expression, seemed like they were longing for something and in a gloomy mood. The lighting also helped establish this mood.

Shot 6:

A close up shot of the driver and who we infer to be the father. This shot was used to clearly show the facial expressions or whats going on in his head. It seem like he was distracted with thought most likely unhappy.

Shot 7:

Another close up shot this time of a different character. Her facial expression seemed very different she seemed more curios and concerned then just bluntly unahappy.

Shot 8:

A close up shot of her brother. Which facial expression was also different although he did seem very gloomy he also seemed worried and having a lot of negative thoughts running through his mind

Shot 9:

A close up shot of the mother. She seemed the most worried and miserable. She seemed as if she left something or somewhere that held a lot of value to her.

**All these close up shots were able to give the viewer and understand of each character and the overall feeling and atmosphere in the car**

Case Study: Psychological/Coming of Age Drama

Film Production, Distribution and Funding

Six major companies control 90% of box office takings:

  • Paramount
  • Universal
  • 20th Century Fox
  • Warner Bros Pictures
  • Walt Disney
  • Columbia Pictures
They are part of the vast conglomerates( a combination of multiple business entities operating in entirely different industries under on company and many subsidiaries.) that are both vertically and horizontally integrated.

Studios that work outside the major studio system are known as "independents" or "indies" such as:
  • Summit Entertainment
  • Film 4 Productions
  • Icon Productions
Mini Majors:
Some of the leading "independents" studios have come to be known as "mini majors" this includes:
  • Dreamworks
  • Lionsgate Entertainment
  • The Weinstein Company
Production: making the film
  • figuring out the idea
  • writing the script
  • pitching it to a studio
  • establishing a budget
  • casting stars and hiring crew members
  • filming
  • editing
To start production, a film requires investors to provide the necessary funding. As box office success is never guaranteed, investors try to reduce the risk of losing money by becoming involved in important decisions.

Before a director can start filming the film has to be greenlit( funding has been made available by the investors) at that point the project will have the most important things such as:
  • principle cast
  • director
  • cinematographer
  • screenplay
It is the producer job to bring all these important things together.

Distribution:
In the film industry, the launch and maintenance of films is a highly competitive process. The time you decided to release your movie is imperative to how well it will sell. The film distributor has to establish how they will present the film to their intended audience. Distribution is a matter of trying to get the film out there and to the public. Things like publicity and marketing play and important role in doing so.

  • deciding on a release date
  • prints to produce and in which cinemas to screen them
  • creating are work for advertisements
  • organizing premiers and screenings
  • press interviews

Marketing: a very important part of distributing film's and there are many different ways you can go about it such as:
  • posters
  • trailers
  • online content
  • special screening/premieres
  • interviews/articles
  • merchandising
  • festivals/awards
Funding:
Film financing is a part of the filmmaking process that takes place before the pre-production and is focused on  determining the potential worth of a project. Producing films can be quite expensive because of all the things that obviously require a lot of money. There are various ways to provide funding for films, for example:

Crowd Funding: asking the public to donate small amount of money

  • The money would be distributed among a wide number of people in order to generate a large enough sum to support the film.
  • This strategy is generally advertised via social media, as it reaches a big audience quickly and the word can be spread with a single click.
  • This also helps bring more attention to the film itself

Charities: voluntarily giving money to those who need it

  • Occasionally, charities will support a film, but only if the film will raise awareness of the topic for which the organization is raising funds.
International Documentary Association (IDA): supports nonfiction filmmaking and filmmakers

  • provides production and development grants to documentary filmmakers and helps them gain scholarships to fundraise their project

Project Proposal

We selected our group members. We originally were working as a group of 4 but we later realized that our working style and interest were very different so we decided to going to work separately. Now I work with only one partner Desarae. We also decided how we would split the work evenly and effectively. We decided on which story and plot we want to use from our ideas

We began working on our project proposals. We finalized what our idea of how we want the story to go and the genre the story is going to be.

Project Proposal: My final will be filming an opening scene title: Inner Turmoil. The project will talk about the struggles and depression of a high school student due to home life. In terms of the AICE Media Studies syllabus, this project will fall under Component 1: Foundation Portfolio. It will fulfil Assessment Objectives 2, 3, and 4. I plan to use the internet to research the genre, the different movies in my genre, influences, and production methods for the project. Due to this being a group project I will be working with Desarae Gilzene.
